Ohio hospitals, like other hospitals across the country, are challenged with health care workforce shortages. To help alleviate the mismatch between supply and demand for staff, hospitals may turn to supplemental staffing vendors to fill temporary vacancies. Even though the workforce shortage seems to be easing in Ohio, quality supplemental agency staff can help hospitals meet the peaks and valleys of occupancy as well as the temporary leave of permanent staff. Having access to high quality, affordable temporary staff can provide alternatives to mandating overtime or closing beds. 

To assist Ohio hospitals with managing temporary staffing vendors, OHA Solutions, a subsidiary of the Ohio Hospital Association, has developed a statewide program to help ensure the quality of nursing and allied health professionals and save hospital money on hourly rates and administrative costs.

The OHA Solutions Staffing Program has filled over 250,000 per diem shifts and over 9,000 long term orders since February 2005. OHA Solutions contracts with 89 medical staffing agencies and branches from across the nation to help over 100 participating OHA member hospitals fill both per diem and long-term staff vacancies. The service facilitates staffing services for nursing vacancies as well as those in radiology, rehabilitation services, laboratory, pharmacy and respiratory therapy and non-clinical specialties.
